May on the Way: How I Become a K9 Spy

Sometimes I start with a well-thought out plan, and sometimes, me being me, things just happen. In my imagination I'm on my way, heading anywhere. Because anywhere's better than here.

Which is why I'm staring at this latch. I'm going to escape today. I've been watching closely to see how they work it, though no one's noticed.

Humans... So unaware...

The Puppy Tales Collection

When puppies get together, there's sure to be some mischief - and fun! These twelve puppy-dog tales introduce some of the fine, upstanding citizens of Houndsville and one or two rascals as well. If you look very carefully, you may discover the bones that those pesky pups have buried on every page.

When I was searching for the info for this book to include in this post, I was aghast to see that its hardcover was no longer available. But guess what? Its paperback will be released in October of this year! I highly recommend this collection; it was a favourite of mine and my sister's when we were younger. Its glossy pages and pictures filled our imaginations and made me wish I could visit Houndsville and all its inhabitants. And trying to find the hidden bones will keep your kids interacting with the stories. The characters are silly and endearing, and the stories will warm your heart and make you laugh.

Because of Winn-Dixie

The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket--and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar.Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship—and forgiveness—can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm.

Writing up on this book reminds me that I have to read it and watch the movie again--which stars AnnaSophia Robb, one of my favourite actresses. Though written for children, this book has a heart and a lesson from which adults should learn. I think, knowing where I am now, this book is actually more important for me to read today than it was when I first read it as a child. It has more to say to me. I hope you will give this book the chance to capture your heart. Now excuse me while I dig Up my old copy from somewhere (hope I still have it!) and read it again.
